Five Minutes with Daniel Selby

The Focus on Framing team recently caught up with Daniel Selby, Operations Manager for Corehaus who will be delivering a case study on "Thorpe Thewles" at the Focus on Framing Seminar on Tuesday 29 March 2022 at the National Conference Centre in Birmingham.

1. Could you please introduce yourself and explain your role?

Hi, I'm Dan Selby and I'm the Operations Manager for Corehaus Ltd. Corehaus is a very innovative offsite construction company in the North-East and utilises a load-bearing light gauge steel frame as the main structure. As a relatively young company my role is varied and ranges from managing factory operations to providing technical support on site. I am part of an experienced team of designers, technicians, managers and production staff all working towards our mission which is to "Transform new build housing delivery"

2. Could you briefly outline your presentation?

My presentation will be a case study of our scheme of 4 terraced social houses for Believe housing in Thorpe Thewles built in collaboration with our sister company Homes by Carlton. I will go through the project from concept to completion, warts and all! Thorpe Thewles was the first project constructed by Corehaus truly offsite utilising the hybrid pod and panel approach and has been a success but also required a steep learning curve for all involved.

3. In your opinion, what are the current biggest challenges in the Light Steel Frame sector?

The obvious biggest challenge on everyone's mind currently is the cost and availability of materials. Aside from this there are numerous technical and compliance challenges to overcome if LSF is to take a larger market share through offsite housebuilders such as ourselves. Fire resistance, thermal performance, warranty provider compliance to name a few.

4. Why do you think it's important for the industry to attend events, such as Focus on Framing?

I think anything which promotes the industry and gets the message out there about alternative forms of construction is very important. The very well publicised housing crisis is only getting worse and events which can speak to an audience about potential solutions that can contribute towards solving it should be encouraged. It's also an opportunity for industry to look at new products and approaches which might resolve problems currently presenting a barrier to market for them.

5. Are there any other speakers you are particularly looking forward to hearing from? If so, who and why?

I'm particularly looking forward to the speakers from our region (EOS and Intelligent Steel) but truthfully everyone listed looks to be presenting something interesting and worthy of attention.
